Cornish Crab on Toast

A classic Cornish dish, crab on toast reflects the simplicity of coastal cooking — fresh ingredients, lightly prepared, and full of flavour.

In Mevagissey and along the Cornish coast, crab has long been landed fresh and eaten the same day, often served simply on bread with a squeeze of lemon.

Ingredients

Fresh white crab meat (or dressed crab)

Thick-cut bread (sourdough or farmhouse loaf)

Butter

Lemon

Fresh parsley

Sea salt and black pepper

Method

Lightly toast the bread until golden and crisp

Spread generously with butter while still warm

Add the fresh crab meat evenly on top

Squeeze over fresh lemon juice

Sprinkle with chopped parsley

Season with sea salt and black pepper

Serve immediately.

A Taste of the Cornish Coast

This dish is all about freshness. Traditionally eaten close to the harbour, it captures the essence of Cornish fishing life — simple, honest, and tied to the sea.
